@LandoGriffin: It was a VERY local story! Either McLlwain or Taberacci (a good goalie) was the main part of the deal, but he refused to be trades without Cunneyworth! lolz!
Given Toronto Maple Leaf's long history of child sex abuse by their homosexual staff (Team? Arena? Both?)? It`s no wonder THEY don`t talk about it... even though it was "common knowledge" in Toronto`s gay community. The "Kids in the Hall" made many references to it...
Anyhow, a few months after that? They broke up! Cunneyworth started playing badly, it was a whole NEW sort of "locker-room distraction" (fighting ex-lovers) and he got traded
Winnipeg is a VERY accepting place! We didn`t care one bit. I had several friends who worked at the arena around that time who told me of this amusing story.

5Cats - I googled "Cunneyworth gay" to see if any mention of the "locker room distraction" is on the internet, and all I found was criticism by Montreal fans for hiring him as coach in 2011 despite that he doesn't speak French. Are you sure he has admitted being gay? Because I`d think there would be a mention somewhere, such as in the articles speculating that John Madden is the anonymous gay NHL player that has discussed the issue without identifying himself.

President Obama phoned him. Good to know Obama has solved all the world's problems and has so much free time... to go golfing... and call homosexuals... and take photo ops of "private moments"...
@LandoGriffin: Not "out of the closet" but yeah, openly gay. Randy Cunneyworth and the other guy we got from Toronto with him? Dave McLlwain I think. They were boyfriends. It was called a "locker room distraction" back then
In baseball, Dave Stewart dated a "shemale" (pre-op) does that count as openly gay?
