I would guess, by the way, that "Hello" is related to "Hail!" as a greeting

Alexander Graham Bell didn't say "Ahoy" - he wanted people to answer their telephone with the greeting "Hoy hoy!"

Also, saying "Hello" comes from the old German "Hallo" tells us absolutely nothing about what the word is supposed to mean.

And I agree that the story told here in no way is the first use of the phrase "Do you know who I am"
