@Mr Atari no, it's the illusion that he is one (~100k years ago, hundreds or thousands of people would probably only assemble like that for the alpha male - today we got people doing that for new sneakers or singers for example). just like the light bulb is not moonlight for the moth.
@squrlz yeah there`s something that can be said about girls (or anyone) who realize their instincts are being targeted and aren`t swept away by them and the others just get overtaken by them. Probably has to do a lot with upbringing like you brought up.

If this were the other way around, the guys in the audience would just be popping wood and muttering to each other about what they'd like like to do to the singer. I`m not sure which behaviour is more embarrassing, but the female is sure louder.

@Paperduck: You may be on to something. I like your moth analogy, in particular.
Part of what I find interesting about the whole phenomenon is how completely beside themselves the girls sometimes become, to the point of, well, hysteria.
