I work at a local TV station and it's true. I was getting twitter feeds of what was going on way before the network would send us a "cut in". and whats funny this is the same for severe weather as well. Google was alerting me faster on my phone than the EAS weather service was to run a crawl along the screen of the TV.

Those of us old enough to remember the endless delays in launching and landing Moon rockets can recall poor Walter Cronkhite (and Wally Schirra!) desperately trying to fill three-hour gaps while the launch was on hold for some tech to tighten a bolt, or while Armstong and Aldrin were going thru a 168-point checklist before they could finally walk on the Moon. I've taken to calling these live coverage fiascos ("We just heard a noise, Jane. It could have been a gunshot... or a loud fart") Moon launches, as in "Oh Christ. This is turning into another Moon launch." Just thot I`d share...
