@HG I read there were medical tents nearby tended by individuals experienced treating such injuries from the wars. Do you guys think they were intentionally trying to maim instead of kill?

I mean if you are trying to kill people with a bomb and you put two in areas that densely populated and you only kill 3 people you either aren't trying to kill people or you suck at bomb making.

I don`t mean to sound callous using the word "only" as even one life lost is precious and serious. I just am speaking logistically.

I agree @WhoDat: They were -comparatively- small IEDs. Still much larger than I'd ever wish to encounter...

So that`s "Thing #2" to be glad about: They were small and primitive, and if one was in a trashcan it was "poorly placed" indeed.

Here's some more info on the devices:

"The explosives used in the deadly Boston Marathon bombing were contained in 6-liter pressure cookers and hidden in black duffel bags on the ground, a person briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

One of the explosives contained shards of metal and ball bearings, and another contained nails, the person said."
