really? you are having THAT hard of a time figuring out what happened? the stick broke too easily and didnt slow his inertia at all, so he had a large portion of his body-weight being thrown towards the ground, unimpeded and unexpectedly, with no time to counteract it.

I don't think the stick could have possibly knocked his leg out from under him with half his weight firmly on it. The only thing I can think of is that the broken stick stabbed him in the knee and he jerked as a reaction to it. Or it has something to do with the patellar reflex like when the doctor hits you below the knee with that little hammer.
