That's exactly why, when we find weapons/ammo caches, we call in the combat engineers & EOD guys to destroy them. You never attempt to use any of it, they come in and catalog what was found (amount & type of weapons/ammo) take pictures/video and then blow that sh*t up!

This kind of stuff dates back to the first world war when the Brits altered hand grenades and bombs to make them explode in the user's hand or weapon.
In WWII the Germans were notorious for leaving booby traps like this wherever they retreated from.
The Yanks did this in Vietnam, it was called project eldest son. They then circulated a fake commie newsletter saying that the guns were exploding because Chinese guns were made from bad steel. It was mainly to make the enemy doubt their gear, and sabotage morale. They also rigged some communist mortar shells so they exploded instantly inside the mortar when fired. This worked but was not widespread.
It`s not officially confirmed, but generally accepted that the Israelis "salt" ammunition like this and distribute it though black market vendors to insurgents.
