I would also think that the Faraday cage around the 'copter would block the radio signals from the controller even without the Tesla coils. He could have used infrared, but the controller he was using clearly had an antenna.

@Zack, as long as they keep the frequency of the tesla coils in another range than the radio transmitter, it should be fine.
