It was meant for Onion readers, who it would have made sense to. It got away and took on a life of its own.

But it's one thing to use satire to highlight the inherent negativity surrounding the coverage of shows like this, but the second it started getting worldwide coverage is when it became a problem. The target is a girl too young to understand the satire, and the media will make damn sure she`s exposed to it for their own ratings.

From what I understand, it`s possibly the first time they`ve ever apologized for anything they`ve done, but with a child involved it`s understandable that they might regret this particular incident.

Plus if they stuck to their guns on it the coverage would go on for weeks, and the kid doesn`t need that. Better to let it go away.
