Beautiful birds. They are rare and very wary of humans. I love the way they fly. They bob up and down with each wing stroke because of their big heads.

Hey, tb, do what I did. I had a peckerwood drilling a hole in my house. Whenever I heard him, I'd go out and run him off, but he kept coming back to the same place.
I drove a couple of nails into the wall just below his perch and attached a bottle rocket head upside down to the nails. (I used 2 nails so the rocket head wouldn`t spin around.) Then I took a single strand from a multi-strand wire, wrapped it a few turns around the base of the fuse, and connected the ends to some heavy speaker wire. I ran that back into the house and connected it to a 12V battery charger.
When he returned and started pecking away at the house, I hit the juice on the charger, which heated the thin strand of wire enough to light the fuse on the bottle rocket head. He got a blast of rocket exhaust up his @$$ followed by a loud bang. Needless to say, he never came back.
