@freddyferret, Your point is, of course, correct. The girl, however, is terribly nervous, likely inexperienced, and quite possibly more than just a bit stupid. As far as she's concerned he was sending her away when he told her "bye bye". Since that`s a fairly typical way to indicate the end of a meeting (not this type, but, you know) it was reasonable for her to expect that he had just, essentially, told her to leave. He was wrong. Simple as that.

He said 'Bye bye`, a contraction of Goodbye which is a contraction of `God be with ye` and she responded with `Adios` which means exactly the same thing. At that moment I don`t think she was trying to be smart, she really thought that was it.
She may have been really nervous and responded badly, she may have limited mental capacity or she may have fried her brains too often but the judge seemed to be enjoying himself too much.
