recent studies (done by pretty much fitting cats with gopro cameras) suggest that the average outdoor house cat kills *like 10 animals per week, far higher than previous estimates. Cats are nocturnal, unless your up all night to feed them, they get hungry, and they just enjoy killing things...

I have lived with lots of cats. They generally kill only to eat. The real problem is humans. Agriculture creates food for rodents. Where there are rodents, there are cats. Get rid of the humans, there will be fewer rodents and the cat population will be reduced. Also, cats are not designed to hunt birds, but they do get them now and then. They are wonderful creatures, far superior to humans as apex predators.
