"The world's 100 richest people earned ... enough money to end extreme poverty worldwide four times over."

[singing] Beautiful dreamer ...... [/singing]

Except the food doesn`t get to the most extreme poor. The warlords swoop in, take the food and sell it for money to buy arms. So, since your money won`t go to support anyone gut a terrorist, why not buy a car :)

HG: "The world's 100 richest people earned ... enough money to end extreme poverty worldwide four times over."

That completely depends on how `extreme poverty` is defined and how much it would take per person per day to raise that to another higher level of poverty.

In some parts of the world, $10 a day is considered to be middle class. Here in America that would still be desperate poverty, pretty much homelessness. Considering that disparity of terms, one can`t possibly calculate what it would take to eliminate poverty adequately.

"... at some point it gets obscene."

That`s your opinion, here in America. In some parts of the world, the fact that you use water to flush your toilet is considered `obscene`, because clean water is so scarce and precious to them.

Judge not, lest Ye be judged.

When you guys get bored you get mean to each other.
And while I find it very entertaining, you are marring the memory of the sexiest car ever built.

Therefore, this thread will self destruct.

@HG, Crakr, I see both sides to it but i think it's a question of scale. These days realistically thats not all that much, sure its more than I`ll ever see and I would probably do something helpful with it if I had it but certainly Crakr is right in the fact you cant make a judgement like that when you know nothing of what the man does with his money currently or is planning to do with anythign he earns in the future.

Sure if I knew you were a billionaire (the 21st century equivalent to the past century`s millionaire) and you did nothing charitable with it then I can make that judgement and I`m sure Crakr would agree too.

"You're making this an extreme ends argument."

It was a hypothetical. The point is every time you make any purchase you are choosing to spend money on that instead of everything else you could spend it on.

"You`re saying that people can`t buy nice things"

Not at all. I have lots of nice things. However at some point it gets obscene. If you have a BMW, good for you. If however you have a custom BMW with platinum detailing on the interior and diamond inlays then you are an a.sshole.
