@AJ: Mexican drug cartels get their guns from border states like Texas.

@Prussia'sFool Not true (excepting, of course, the ones that Eric Holder sold them in a pernicious attempt to promote violence and murder of innocent Mexicans so as to justify further restricting our rights under the 2nd Amendment). Most of the guns used by criminals in Mexico come up through Central America.

Just out of interest, does anybody know of a serious politician or pressure group seeking to ban all privately held guns?

Yes, a many elected Democrats would love to ban private gun ownership. However, they know they can't actually do it in one fell swoop, so they push their agenda incrementally.

First they want registration of handguns, and then all firearms. Next they want to ban private sales, and then start putting licensed dealers out of business. Next they will ban so-called assault rifles (ugly guns), then semi-automatic pistols, then semi-auto rifles and shotguns, then all handguns, then any firearm that doesn`t have a "sporting purpose," (as if the 2nd amendment was adopted to guarantee our right to keep and bear sporting goods), and finally they`ll confiscate all firearms -- at least all those that people were stupid enough to register.

Just don`t expect them to have the intellectual honesty to tell you that up front.

ive asked twice and got no response. if there is a gun ban and all the law abiding citizens turn in their guns, how do they protect themselves from criminals still in possession of handguns?

They don't.

Hey, at least you got a response.

This is one of them many more if you look. Politicians know they can do it outright all at once so they go about it laws by law until they get what they want.
