Remember Russia has wanted both eastern and western ports for nearly 200 hundred years. This one reason why America has so much trade and money. This is why Russia has long been interested in Istanbul, but Lattakia and Tartous in Syria could prove just as beneficial. But Syria would need a stable, pro-Russian government. This is why Russia sides with Assad despite his loss of control, because if he is put back in power, the Russian believe they will be able control him for their interests.

@Modwain: nope, they are contemplating dutch patriots there because turkey asked for it, not cause syria is such a mess.
True they still contemplating it, but it's for defense against Syria because Syria is a mess, they maybe also want a cool fireworks show if they have some left over, but I doubt it.
To answer your earlier question:
Thing is, the worlds supper powers (usa, russia and china) wont get involved, for what ever reason, so no one will stick their neck out..
A. Everybody is in a financial crisis. B. The US, Russia, and China support the opposite sides and opposite interests. Basically another proxi war, but what do you think would happen if US forces began battling Russian or Chinese forces. I doubt it would ease any tensions instead i think it would likely just create a more destructive war and probably cause another arms race. I`m really not saying it`s a good thing, only that it`s better than the alternatives.
