I remember seeing this a while back on a documentary and thought that it was a great idea - at least as a temporary solution (won't help if the fire gets you).

I don`t think that there is much fear of methane - after all, methane is a heavy gas and naturally sinks to the lowest point possible (which is why ya never hear of methane poisoning in bathrooms today). Besides that, from what I remember, there is a replacable filter just before the mouthpiece which filters out any gases that might be in the plumbing line.

They should install these in all public buildings over two stories with instructions for use.
