McGovern1981: Nah, think about it, what would it be in the air that would make the barrel explode? I mean, the barrel is designed to withstand huge gas pressures, and if it doesn't go when the much denser water gets expelled, why would an air pocket matter?

Myth Busters did a special on teh myth of firing a gun underwater...the exploding barrel myth is just that...a myth.
Firing a gun underwater works fine, but the water decreases the power of the shot exponentially. A .357 only has lethal power for something like 10 feet underwater.
