@McGovern: Joke around all you want, it still doesn't change the fact that whatever your country is doing is clearly not working and needs to be changed. Norway has a tenth the incarceration rate as the US (per 100,000) so instead of mocking perhaps you should take notes. Yes, the US and Norway face very different policing challenges, but incarceration is a huge problem in the US and if those prisons actually rehabilitated people then it wouldn`t be so bad, but...

@creamk: I recently watched a documentary on the prison "business" in the U.S. One guy got it, he said (regarding how to deal with criminals): If the only tool in your belt is a hammer then every problem looks like a nail. In the U.S. the only tool they have is incarceration so the solution to every problem looks like incarceration.

We have learned a lot from the USA (really, we have and are grateful). Isn't it time USA starts learning from others?

And how did you get those gangs in the first place? Was it.. wait for it... inequality?
What country jails the most people? The answer never has been longer jail sentences but rehabilitation. The more i see and hear about US values, the more it comes to one thing: me me me. Criminal: shoot them. Sick: let them die. Poor: it's their own fault their poor, make money instead. Giving a fair chance to all citizens: not in a million years. Second chance: no, absolutely no.
This has Ayn Rand written all over it, it has failed big time and worse: it has ingrained a whole generation or two into completely skewed values.
We are altruistic animals, we tend to help without gaining from it. It`s in our nature, blocking it will lead to a sick society. Fear of anything and everything around just because (you think) everyone else is as selfish as you and will kill to get what they want.
