Yeah... I pretty much did this a long time ago. It's called being a mature adult.
The only thing I don`t do is respect *everyone*, because there are some people who A) don`t deserve it, and B) don`t respect you if you treat them with respect.
I have a coworker who treated almost everyone around her like crap (she`d kiss the butt of the managers though). I tried being nice to her, but she just treated me even worse. Eventually I just started a tit-for-tat approach, where every time she was rude to me, I`d be rude right back, otherwise I wouldn`t say anything. She hasn`t completely changed over the nearly 4 years I`ve worked with her, but she`s MILES better than she was when I started working with her.
So, yes, you should try to be a good human being, but you can`t let the a$$hats walk all over you. Sometimes you have to treat someone as badly they treat you. It`s not like they haven`t earned it.
