They are similar films, aren't they. I reckon although some part co-incide a lot, the Matrix could indeed of ripped off Ghost in the Shell a bit in concept, but there are so many difference it is equally possible that the two parties actually have similar, but original ideas. It probably remain a mystery.

Well, since I can't see the site I can`t say anything (error message). I, frankly, wouldn`t be surprised though. The US has been taking or remaking Japanese (as well as other countries`) ideas for a long time. Not to say they haven`t done the same, but I find the US does it the most...
I think a lot of it has to do with Americans being impatient. If it isn`t in their language and they don`t get instant gratification (Movies usually lacking plot, usually due to the fact that they have to be fast paced and move quickly onto sex scenes and/or explosions) they don`t watch it. It`s a shame that our country is like that a lot, but...
For example, "Shall we Dance" was originally a Japanese movie, and mostly dealt with the cultural shame of a man taking dance lessons. It was really interesting, and good, and totally didn`t need a remake... But we remade it anyway, changing some of the most interesting plot (Dealing with culture) along the way. I`m on a bit of a rant, aren`t I? :-

Dito on what skywisejf said. I could go into it but it's pointless. There are TONS of U.S. movies that are remakes of Japanese movies. And there are tons of South American movies that are remakes of U.S. movies. In my opinion the Japanese movies are better most of the time. But on the whole most Americans would not like the original movie. The first time I saw an advert for "Matrix" I thought it was a remake of 2 different Japanese movies, "GITS" being one of the two. Then when I saw the trailer I realised it was not. There are just a lot of similaritys as this site shows. Anywho, If you like both of those movies check out "Animatrix." It`s really good. The special effects look more realistic then the movie. Adult Swim shows a few of them every other month or so. It`s worth the time to watch.
