Seriously aajv? Idk, I think I'd rather explain whatever small amount of scarring he must have had. Going to, say, a pospective employer and saying `I was a soldier who was injured by an IED` simply sounds noble. Saying you decided to get an unnecessarily large tattoo that might be disturbing to some people to cover it makes you sound reckless.
And calling whatever might have been there disfiguring seems like a stretch. Normally, things that are disfiguring actually have to alter your figure, and aside from that absurd tattoo he looks pretty intact. Clearly his skin was intact enough to get a tattoo on at least, and you can clearly see perfectly healthy skin in the areas around and in plenty of areas inside it. Just because he has a couple scars doesn`t mean sh-t, especially considering the fact that the kind of person who would be ok having a tattoo like that would be the sort of person who might not think something through and screw up his face.

He may be preparing for a zombie apocalypse. If it happens, it will be hard to find a tattoo artist to make you look like one of the dead, much less one with the time to do something that elaborate (with zombies trying to get you and all that).
This may be his way of preparing for it.. perhaps reasoning if it does happen, they may see his face and think he's one of them. But this is all based on speculations and assumptions. if something were to happen like that we may never know to what extent, perhaps not even be prepared for it.

Mm- nice tat. I don't like facial tattoos- but I know those who do, and lets face it, as long as you are old enough to realise what that will involve. Let people do what makes them happy...
