Hero's "steam engine" was only a novelty because because it was good for little else. Blowing jets of steam into the air is an extremely inefficient way of converting fuel into forward motion. It could not have powered a usable car.
A good point, but it did prove the concept of motion from steam and could have been a starting point. Perhaps a steam turbine might have been invented much less than 1700 years later.
I didn`t mean to imply that Hero`s device could have powered a car itself.
