In all seriousness, this is the fault of an inexperienced photographer lacking the confidence to tell subjects how to pose. I used to get shots like this; then I learned there is simply no way to get a good posed shot (as opposed to a candid) without taking charge and being a director.
Woman in booth: Pour a coffee in your cup, hold it in both hands, leaning over the table a bit, smile, and look at Miss Teen's face.
Miss Teen: Take two steps back, hold the plate with just one hand, put the plate closer to the diner, and look at the diner.
Something like that.
Judging from this shot, I`m pretty sure that Miss Teen was told simply to "Serve the pancakes with a smile" and the diner was given no instruction whatsoever.
