That sounds A LOT like the fabled 'tripping` that`s said to happen on the verge of death.
He mentions the colors being brighter, and the edges sharper, and strong emotions, and distortion of time...anyone who knows anything about hallucinogens prob recognizes those as being exactly, EXACTLY the things people describe after tripping. Like, if someone showed me a clip of him relating his experience w/o any context, I would instantly assume he was talking about hallucinating.
So idk about either option. I think he experienced what many others who have been brought back did. If someone never tripped before, they`d probably say "Oh, that must be heaven, since I was dying and all of a sudden found myself in a strange, surreal place and felt very odd." when they were just hallucinating and didn`t recognize it.
Allegedly the effects come a rush of DMT(DiMethylTriptamine), a very potent hallucinogen that also affects sleep/dreaming, from the pineal gland(?).
