@ Kalimata - her tragically dramatic life. Her dramatic Torch Songs. Not to mention those really great shoes in Wizard of Oz!
It's kind of long to explain, but the short version is it was a differant era when drag queens and gays didn`t have role models, so over-the-top poster children were adopted for the role. Gay community was drawn to dramatic people who didn`t fit in quite right, and that describes Judy Garland... and Barbra Streisand... and Bette Midler .... and etc etc etc

@Gerry1of1 I have heard many times that Judy Garland was a massive icon in the gay community, but I've never been able to find out why? Any reason in particular?

While I am not Takei, I do love Takei, so am I Takei now? Either way, Takei or neigh I wish for no more Twilight today, gay or any other way.

@ Ilikelogic - The "Friends of Dorothy" is a code phrase we used before we could be so open or out in public. If you wanted to page all the gay men on a cruise ship you'd ask them to page the Friends of Dorothy to the Lido Deck {or wherever}. Same at hotels and conventions.
Dorothy as in Wizard of Oz Dorothy as in Judy Garland the 1st great gay icon.
