@Samsquanch: close but no cigar. The Mayan civilization was already in decline when the Spaniards arrived. The Mayan collapse already happened around 900 AD.

Yes...that was pretty basic. But, it's also a good damned explanation for the Mayan long count calendar, and why it ends when it does. "Meh, we`ll get around to it when it`s closer to the day," is human argument. Chances are, the Mayans probably would have got around to it about 20 or 30 years ago calculating the next long count calendar...but, those rascally Spaniards put a chink in their plans.
