build a huge and cheap machine or a small and cheaper machine for making small complicated structures? hmm... do i want my medical prosthetic being made on site or far away at a more expensive machine and requiring shipping?

"Can it print a 3d printer?"

A Von Neumann Self-replicating machine will probably be developed very soon. Biology does it all the time. :)
