Several of my family members have waited table, my daughter at uni still does now and then. They always got minimum wage plus pooled tips. If a tip is (to all intents) mandatory then it just gets to be a distraction from the dining experience. I want waiting staff to be polite and efficient, I don't want them anxious or to be aware that they are trying to cajole a bigger tip. I just want to eat, pay and leave.
I mean, if the floor was exceptionally clean and the temperature just right should I leave a tip or the cleaners? Or the guy who maintains the heating system?
I tip, I`m used to tipping, but it does make me uncomfortable that someone is trying to get me to like them enough to give them more money. It`s demeaning.
