This sums up society as well. Someone attacks you or your home and you defend yourself. Guess who gets in trouble?

Here in the UK, we have some of the strongest defence laws in the world and they're explicitly stronger in your own home. You can legally attack intruders on sight and in some circumstances you can legally kill them.
It very rarely gets to court at all - the last cast I remember reading about involved a person shooting someone else *before* that person had got into the house. Shot them dead, through a window. It was ruled reasonable force.
The handful of convictions are a result of deliberate torture and murder. For example, beating the intruder, throwing them in a pit and setting fire to them.
