There is kinda of something to this just in a different way.
A tribe in Africa, on the winter solstice would send out there shamens to collect these mushrooms. They would dress in red coats with white rabbit fur trim, they would climb every hut in the village and jump down the smoke hole on top and give the people that lived their a hand full of these mushrooms.

I've actually heard of this before and there is a lot more to it. Take, for instance, tinsel...

Amanitas are TOXIC. They'll put you in a different headspace all right, as several people manage to do permanently every year.
