These days with the right colourist, good lighting and a decent compositing team, you really can't see where the effects are. Which is great, you can just enjoy the movie. What surprises me these days is when I thought something might have been done in post and turns out to be a practical.

no, don't be silly. all movies (from the very start) used painted backdrops for almost every scene. we do the same thing now with the green screen. same ol,` same ol`...

They put together a massive green screen on the harbor shore near where I live the other day: three end-to-end stacks of 40-foot shipping containers, all clad in plywood and painted bright green! I figure they could put the actors, well, just about anywhere with a gimmick like that: the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls, the Swiss Alps, a Redwood forest...
