@Isobel, by nerve-regeneration, they mean the dendrites and axons are regrowing, not the cell-body. The cell body is very much alive, just not able to communicate. Thus, no cell-regeneration is going on.

There are tons of ways they could have done this... knockouts, upregulation, gene silencing/ RNAi... or even just running all the cellular proteins on an SDS gel and cutting the axon then doing it again and doing a 'spot the difference`
