The hardest puzzle I ever attempted was about 30 years ago. It's called a "shmuzzle puzzle". It only has 168 pieces but every piece is cut exactly the same. In my puzzle they were all salamander shaped, like some damned M.C.Escher drawing come to life. Never finished it and it definitely made me seek anger management.

I read a news story about this guy. His family bought him a 5000 piece puzzle. it took him months to assemble, but his dog ate the last piece.

Just a little FYI: 5,000 pieces isn't the hardest. Especially since they`re all normal shaped pieces.
They have 10,000, 15,000 and even 20,000 piece puzzles out there.
Little story, I was doing a 1K piece puzzle, I`m not an addict, I just throught it was an absolutely cool picture, and my friend came over in the night and stole a piece. I "finished" it the next day, but there was a piece missing. So I assumed I dropped it. So I turn the living room inside out upside down, look in every nook and cranny twice and eventually get upset and assume the piece was never there to start with.
So I cut up some cardboard, color it the color of the piece, and trace the shape of the missing piece. Then I taped the puzzle together with clear tape. Front and back.
10 minutes later, my friend comes over and gives me the piece because he felt really bad...
