George Lucas on the '12 parsec kessel run` "...in the Star Wars universe, traveling through hyperspace requires careful navigation to avoid stars, planets, asteroids, and other obstacles, and that since no long-distance journey can be made in a straight line, the "fastest" ship is the one that can plot the "most direct course", thereby traveling the least distance."
Say you want to go from one side of the grand canyon to the other. You have either a car or a plane to use. Should you try to drive the most direct route with the car you are going to plummet into the canyon. Take the most direct route with the plane and you arrive safely.
