They use aluminum for the shiny part in the middle. For master recordings, they use 24K gold. I have a copy of Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" pressed on 24K gold.

@Canoas I don't think the shiny surface is sandwiched between layers. We used old CDs as bird scarers, and after just a few weeks the shiny side had flaked off leaving clear plastic discs.

why does everyone here know how to erase cds? why would you ever need to do this? WHAT ARE ON YOUR CDS?
