They use aluminum for the shiny part in the middle. For master recordings, they use 24K gold. I have a copy of Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" pressed on 24K gold.

@Canoas I don't think the shiny surface is sandwiched between layers. We used old CDs as bird scarers, and after just a few weeks the shiny side had flaked off leaving clear plastic discs.
