@mandingo3519- 99% of all the species ever existed on earth are extinct. We are mammals and our ancestors (mammalian ancestors)co-existed with the dinosaurs and were mostly burrow dwellers. So when the meteor hit earth some of our ancestors were shielded thus and lived through the extent of fallout and nuclear winter consuming tubers and roots. Then they emerged and found the earth to be no more dominated by the feisty dinosaurs. And thus they evolved.
