Did it occur to you that popcorn doused with butter stinks? Or perhaps the smell of burnt dead meat from all the burger joints, steak houses, diners, etc.? These people immigrated to a foreign land and adapted to all the nasty smells that are the norm in those countries, most likely without a complaint. It works both ways. Most of us (Western) people smell of booze more often than not. That is not a very pleasant smell either.

If you`re not paying me and you expect me to smell your stinky ass kids all day, you can get over it if I try to freshen them. Not like she sprayed it in their eyes or down their throat.
