Fuel efficiency is actually distance divided by fuel consumption, but other than that, Davymid sounds spot on. More and more energy/fuel is wasted overcoming friction the faster you go.
Anyway, speeding limits arguably help in that you're better off being in an accident at 50 mph than at 80 mph.

Heck, the Mercedes-McLaren SLR (top sports car), if driven at maximum speed (over 200 mph), will empty its 21-gallon fuel tank in 19 minutes. True story. Just because you spent less time actually driving =/= less fuel consumed.
There's a good reason why passenger flights do not take place at supersonic speed.

One of my history professors was talking about the gas crisis of the 70s and how lawmakers lowered the speed limit because studies showed that cars were less fuel efficient at high speeds. What they didn't account for is the fact if you go slower it takes longer and the situation worsens. With all due respect, your history professor needs to go back to science class. Fuel efficiency is measured in fuel consumption divided by distance. It just so happens that the most fuel-efficient speed in most vehicles is somewhere around 55-60 mph. If I drive to my grandparents house at 60mph and arrive there in an hour, that`s more fuel efficient than driving there at 120mph and arriving in 30 minutes. Because I`ll have used more fuel.

Also, I have a friend who makes frequent trips between our home in Denver to Phoenix. The stretch of road after Colorado Springs through New Mexico and Arizona is empty desert. Most of it is out in the middle of nowhere: no other cars, no buildings, no trees. He takes his car up to 180 miles an hour because there is NOTHING out there. Still, there are traffic cops who only go out that far because they know people speed. It`s a disgusting waste of money when they should be patrolling the cities where there is more danger.
