I am friends with a married couple who are both engineers and graduated from the same engineering class. They applied and were hired at the same company. They started the woman off at $20,000 a year less than her husband (her grades were similar or slightly better than his). They kept the jobs because they wanted to live in that town and it's the only industry. I will say that is uncommon in the industrialized world these days but it still does happen.

those leaving college today and entering the job force recieve equal pay. its the old dogs that have the wage they had from 30+ years ago that make any statistic like these start to look true. now a days, engineers are hired as engineeres, and scientists as scientists. gender plays no part salary negotiations.
