The playdough is a pretty pooty shock absorber. He'd be better off with pretty much any foam, or even cloth or a bunch of tiny springs than play dough, which can be made with flour + water + colorant.

To expand on what scienceguy47 is saying. It is basically a non-newtonian fluid. But this one in more of a solid putty state. Lots of cool videos about it on youtube and Mythbusters did a bit to run across a body of "water".
