...selfish and don't do their fair share. Even the evil Dick Cheney and his wife donated 78% of their income in 2005. Voluntarily...

So why do we think the government, made up of the political elite left or right would do it better?

Class envy or class warfare is just not a good thing ever.

So, it is ok for helping the needy, but with someone else's money and resources? So it really doesn`t cost most of us anything or much does it?
Very generous indeed. Now I see why you have no faith in the generosity of others.

I believe that neighbors help neighbors. If someone I knew needed help, I`d be there to help. No Charge. But let our government do it, and we need a couple of commissions a new office created, new standards and practices, maybe a dozen employees at 100,000 a year with lifetime retirement at age 55. All to help my poor neighbor in need. As I said, donate all the money you wish. I do. The point I was and am making is the Government is the most expensive form of charitable help there is. We can do better.

Here is a good example of our Government and tax.

It's not easy to work the Spanish-American War into casual conversation, much less news coverage. But journalists had a chance recently when federal officials announced the end of the federal excise tax on telephone calls. An item from Marketwatch.com was typical:

Last week the Treasury Department announced it would stop collecting the 3 percent federal excise tax on long-distance telephone service that Americans have been paying since 1898, when the tax was first levied to help finance the Spanish-American War.

That was June of 2006. 1898 to 2006? Really? Remember we pay taxes that are called many other things. They get enough of our money, they need to spend it better.

"Leave the helping of others be done individually with your own money to the charities of your choice. The government, is not the place to operate a charity for the less fortunate."

Tridirk great thinking! Except... by your logic the government should let people go hungry and die! I mean really then let's take away WIC, Welfare, and heating help for the elderly! Let`s let people and their CHILDREN starve and be homeless! Won`t we all be better off then when crime inevitably goes up?

So thanks, but I`d rather see the wealthiest people have the tax breaks that they don`t even need expire. If CEO`s and big companies paid a living wage then maybe we wouldn`t need to tax them to provide services! For example Walmart refering people to public welfare programs for healthcare. Now if they want to raise prices in response to tax increases good let them! The majority of business in this country is still small so let`s give them an edge in the compition!
