Because it's the right thing to do. The USA used to have a racially segregated military, right? No doubt there was opposition to desegregation. No doubt people thought it would create unnecessary conflict within the military. So why did they do it? Besides, the conflict didn`t occur in other countries when DADT was repealed. It`s by no means certain it would occur in the USA military. Opposition within the military is no indicator - there was majority opposition within the UK military as well. Then it happened and soldiers reacted rationally to the known rather than irrationally to the unknown, so it was a non-issue.
