Sometime around 1980 I took a college course on the Future. We had to do a project about something that would happen in about 2020 I think was the target date. It always irked me that a guy that did a piece on "space ball" got a better grade than my piece on Phillip Morris marijuana. The more outrageous the prediction in a closer timeline is the trend in future predictions.

BrimstoneOne There is a bit more in the Mayan calendar to Dec 21, 2010 (yes 21, not 12 or 13). It's not just a year change. The changes are only every 26,000 years and they signal a new type of world. Not an end of world, but a drat lot more than just a new year.
The internet was started in 1957, but the concept had been thought out well before then. Even if they hadn't thought that far into it, it`s not surprising that someone had that specific concept about the internet.
