There are very intelligent people that believe in religion/"have faith" and very intelligent people that do not. However, I think that most people without faith recognize that historically organized religion has done more harm than good in the world (besides the often cited crusades Martin Luther the father of the protestant reformation was a vocal anti-semite and extremely influencial on Hitlers viewpoints, which were ultimately reflected in his later policies and actions, as another example of religion being responsible for injustice and destruction.) It is this realization, this epiphany that typically suggests to these people that they examine and question their faith and seek alternatives. Ultimately, however, once faith is lost it is difficult to believe in an alternative entirely, and so they always question all religions and creeds from tat point on, which inherently means learning and researching other faiths, something not as present in those never lost their given
