Aww, this is old but still cute. The officer should have told the kid to go get marbles or blocks and do the problems physically, that's what I remember doing as a kid.

And ddaq89, as some other people have mentioned, the kid is four. When I was first learning subtraction we read 8-3 as "eight take away 3," it`s a pretty common teaching method with really young kids. It`s usually easier to learn that way because then the kids understand that it`s as if they`re "taking away" three objects from a pile of eight.
