Same4Walls: most places I've been to in the last few years have you slide the card yourself, then sign the slip of paper (or us stylus on a screen). For small purchases, generally under $100, no one`s ever asked to even see the card itself.

As long as he wasn`t looking too scruffy, the cashier probably didn`t even think twice. It`s also entirely possible that it was a company card, as well - might not even have had a person`s name on it, just the business`s.
