Alright...this happened in the Toledo zoo (near where I live) so I can explain what happened. Mr. Redfox (the trainer in video) had worked with this seven year old elephant for its entire life. After the attack, Redfox said that he had never seen the elephant act like it did and that the attack was completely unprovoked. He probably should have observed the warning signs, but when he finally did catch on, it was too late.

the elephant was obviously aggravated at something outside, or maybe a baby or other relative was out there. The animal was already nervous the first time it pushed him out. He should have took the hint. When he came back, it felt threatened. Like SunnyNphilly said, animals have body language. If you are going to work with them, you better learn it.
