There`s about 5 gene pairs inherited per parent (give or take, depending on race). The combined 10 gene pairs have thousands of combinations that can alter the appearance of skin.

Which is a good summary of genetics, really. Find an answer, look in more detail and find that it`s not that simple. If I recall correctly, about a dozen genes are involved in human skin colour. At least, that`s what is currently thought. It probably isn`t that simple.
