I'm pretty sure J.R. Ewing had something to do with this.

jamie, BP produce about 5 billions of barrels of oil per day from their oil assets in 93 countries. They're not going to sweat over 5 thousand barrels a day leaking from one well in the Gulf. Small beer, friend.

Every day that thing gushes is hurting them enormously, in corporate reputation. Believe me, if BP could plug it, they would have done by now. Not out of social responsibility, just because it`s makes good financial sense. Your conspiracy bullsh*t it just that... bullsh*t.

so they want us to believe that they do not know how to put a damn cap on this thing?

more than likely they are trying to figure out how to best keep as much oil as they can and that means running a shunt to it to continue the flow rather than capping it off and having to scrap this well for years until they can rebuild the whole thing, ligiate in court, finally get approaval to restart it etc.
