"Most of the founding fathers were deist, not theist. Benjamin Franklin was an Atheist"

He most certainly was not an Atheist. From his own autobiography:

"...Sunday being my studying day, I never was without some religious principles. I never doubted, for instance, the existence of the Deity; that He made the world, and governed it by His providence; that the most acceptable service of God was the doing good to man; that our souls are immortal; and that all crime will be punished, and virtue rewarded, either here or hereafter."

You can certainly argue he was a Diest, and make a tough arguement that he wasn't a Christian, but he always was a believer in some type of god.

The left and the right trying to co-opt the founders is getting ridiculous.

""God given freedoms" and God this god that mentioned all through the constitution."

What the hell are you talking about. Where in the Constitution is God mentioned?

Well put ElSombrero.

And Jonas999, true Christians don't take their lord`s name in vain, nor do they swear like a sailor, so to speak. Sorry to be nitpicky.

tridirk, few people in general have tolerance for anyone these days. It`s rather disheartening.
